Dr. John Kingsley is the founder and president of the Atlanta and the Alabama Vascular and Vein Centers. He is a board certified vascular surgeon and a board certified phlebologist, and one of the original physicians in the U.S. to develop and practice the modern vein treatment methods. His vein centers are some of the most popular in the world, as patients are referred from thoroughout the southeast by other physicians and by patients. Dr. Kingsley has performed more than 5000 endovenous ablation operations, and he and his colleagues have performed more than 8000 such procedures. His Alabama Phlebology Training Institute is one of the premier training centers in the U.S. where other physicians and support staff learn the modern vein treatment methods.
Dr. Kingsley grew up in Pensacola, Florida and attended the University of Florida where he received his Bachelor of Science and his Doctor of Medicine degrees. His surgery training was at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, and he subsequently practiced as a Navy surgeon for three years. He practiced general and vascular surgery in Oregon for several years, and later moved back south to Alabama. He was chairman of the vascular surgery program at the Carraway Medical Center in Birmingham, and subsequently developed the Alabama Vascular and Vein Center. His current focus is on the vein specialty, and he is one of the original doctors in the U.S. to become board certified in phlebology. His experience is known throughout the world, and he is a consultant for the Tokyo Vein Clinic where he visits regularly, and is a frequent speaker to the Australasian College of Phlebology for which he was made an emeritus fellow. Dr. Kingsley has three children, two attending the University of Alabama and one in Portland, Oregon. He resides in Birmingham and in Atlanta based upon the demand for his services.
Board Certification: Dr. Kingsley is doubly Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He became Board Certified in general surgery soon after his training by completion of written and oral examinations. He later became Board Certified in vascular surgery when this was designated a separate specialty. This too required written and oral examinations. Re-certifications are recommended every 10 years in the U.S. Dr. Kingsley has successfully been recertified at each recommended interval for both general surgery and vascular surgery. Board Certification in vascular surgery in the U.S. is considered a special credential, for only about 3000 surgeons have qualified and successfully completed the requirements and the examinations. In 2008, the initial Board Certification examination in Phlebology was offered, and Dr. Kingsley successfully completed the requirements and examination for this important credential also. Dr. Kingsley is also a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT), having successfully completed the examinations after many years of experience with vascular ultrasonography. This credential is important due to the critical ultrasound knowledge required to accurately diagnose and treat all vein problems.
Dr. Kingsley is licensed to practice medicine in the states of Alabama and Georgia.
Dr. Kingsley was recently (2009) selected President of the Alabama Vascular Society, an honor he shall fulfill until 2011. He has been President of the American Society of Outpatient Surgeons, and Chairman of the Surgery Dept of Carraway Medical Center in Birmingham. He is a selected Fellow of the American Society of Vascular Surgery and the Southern Association of Vascular Surgeons. He is the primary U.S. consultant for the Tokyo Vein Clinic, and in 2007 was selected to the Australasian College of Phlebology as an Emeritus Fellow. He achieved the rank of Commander in the U.S. Navy, and was awarded the prestigious honorable discharge upon his completion of service.
